Luis Ramos, of Frank Espinoza’s “Espinoza Boxing Club”, is already looked upon as one of the hottest young prospects in boxing. After a decorated amateur career spanning more than 100 fights and 6 national championships, Ramos turned to the professional ranks in late 2007. Having already built an impressive record of 16 wins, 8 coming by way of knockout, Ramos’ following in the Southern California area is impressive, to say the least. Ramos is never in a dull fight, and fights with a crowd-pleasing style. Keep an eye on Ramos in the near future, as his next scheduled bout is set to be televised on Telefutura on September 17, 2010, from Los Angeles, California.
In response to the release sent out Tuesday by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions which stated that Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was “in jeopardy,” Bob Arum, chairman of Top Rank, the promoter of seven-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, had the following to say: “Let’s be very clear on the real issues we differ on. It’s not about being tested. Manny is onboard with that since it’s such a major concern of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. It’s about who does the testing and the scheduling of the procedures. Manny will submit to as many random urine tests requested. Regarding the blood tests, he will subject himself to three tests; one given in January during the week the fight is formally announced, one thirty days from the fight, no later than February 13, and the final one immediately following the fight, in Manny’s locker room. The major issue related to the testing rests with which independent agency will administer these tests. The United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) cannot do it because they will not amend its procedures to accommodate the blood testing schedule we have outlined. USADA, under its guidelines, would have the right to administer random blood tests as many times as they want up to weigh-in day and that is ludicrous. continue...
IS FLOYD SR. RIGHT? PACMAN ON ROIDS? I have to say it is hard to believe that Pacquiao does not want to take the blood test to prove he is not on any performance enhancing drugs. Mayweather is willing to take the same exact test at the same time. Could Floyd Sr. be right this time? Pacquiao has really thrown the media and fans into a loop with this. Freddie Roach says that the NSAC testing is fine but the Oylympic Style drug testing isn’t. We are confused.
Everybody is on their wits end as to whether continue...
MANNY PACQUIAO IS REFUSING OLYMPIC STYLE DRUG TESTING, BY DRAWING BLOOD Golden Boy Promotions has issued a statement announcing that the mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is in jeopardy because Manny Pacquiao is refusing to comply with Olympic style drug testing as requested by Mayweather’s management. Early today Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions (representing Mayweather Promotions), was contacted by Top Rank President Todd duBoef, who informed Schaefer that Pacquiao would not agree to have his blood taken within 30-days of the bout. Schaefer commented, “Todd told me that Pacquiao has difficulty with taking blood and doesn’t want to do it so close to the fight. He, Pacquiao, would only agree to have blood drawn before the kick-off press conference and after the fight.”
PACQUIAO DEMANDS 10 MILLION DOLLARS PER POUND OVER 147 LBS For fear of being outsmarted by Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, by way of his lawyer Franklin Gacal, said in a text message late Tuesday night in the Philippines that the Filipino fighter will be “demanding a penalty of $10 million per pound or a fraction thereof over and above 147 lbs during the weighin” in relation to the March 13, 2010 fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Gacal, however, made it clear that the “penalty applies to both fighters”, meaning if Pacquiao fails to make weight, he will also be forced to cough out the same amount.
Against Juan Manuel Marquez last September, Mayweather was compelled to pay Marquez a total of $600,000 for coming in at 146 lbs. The agreed weight was 144 lbs. Mayweather went on to beat the overpowered Mexican on a lopsided 12-round decision. It is unclear if Mayweather will agree to what appears to be an over-the-top demand by Team Pacquiao. Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions are staging the fight and a formal annoucement is being awaited anytime this week. Both fighters are guaranteed a purse of $25 million each and their total earnings can go up to as high as $40 million apiece continue...
POWELL VS LATIMORE REMATCH FOR IBF 154LB ELIMINATOR Negotiations are set to begin for an IBF jr middleweight eliminator for the #1 ranking and mandatory challenger status between Deandre Latimore and Sechew Powell, which will be a much anticipated rematch. The Powell camp informed IBF Championship Chairman Lindsay Tucker of Powell’s availability today. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” said Powell. “The loss to Deandre has been a thorn in my side for a year and a half, and this is the chance I’ve been hoping for, to redeem myself from the loss, and get back to the place I was before it. You’ll see the real Sechew Powell in the ring this time.” Manager Mark Vaz added, “We are very happy to have this fight come along. Sechew was terribly disappointed that his scheduled fight last week in Vegas fell through at the last minute, he had trained hard and was in fantastic shape. This is the best way we could think of to start the new year.” continue...
PAVLIK, PETERS, VANES, AND OMAR HENRY ALL WIN TONIGHT IN OHIO TOPRANK PPV WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KOs) scored a brutal fifth round TKO over WBC #3 Miguel Espino (20-3-1, 9 KOs) on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio. Both fighters went right at each other immediately and traded punches non-stop. Espino was deducted a point for a punch after the bell in round one. The war continued through rounds two and three. Pavlik dropped Espino twice in round four and after he sent him to the deck in the fifth, Espino’s corner asked referee Steve Smoger to stop the fight. Time was 1:44.
In a wildly entertaining bout Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter (33-3, 26 KOs) scored a fourth round TKO over 363lb Gabe “Big G” Brown (18-13-4, 12 KOs) at 2:58. Although Peter dominated the action, Brown’s antics won the night as he taunted the former world champion repeatedly. After eating a hard punch, Brown proceeded to stick out his chin and absorb four clean shots only to call for more. After being knocked down in the fourth round, Brown unloaded the classic bolo punch on Peter bringing the crowd to a frenzy. Peter pounced on Brown shortly after and referee Randy Jarvis waved off the contest. Upon leaving the ring Peter returned to the locker room and “Big G” was mobbed at ringside for fan pictures. continue...
BOXING REFEREE JIMMY VILLERS COLLAPES AFTER BOXING MATCH YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Boxing referee Jimmy Villers collapsed on his way to the locker room Saturday night after a bout on the undercard of Kelly Pavlik's middleweight title defense against Miguel Espino.
Villers had just officiated Miguel Angel Garcia's featherweight victory against Yogli Herrera at the Beeghly Center on the campus of Youngstown State University when he collapsed with what appeared to be a heart attack.
Medical personnel used a defibrillator and strapped oxygen to his face, and Villers was awake and alert when he was placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.
A cardiologist sitting near the ring helped take care of Villers, a former boxer. continue...
TOP RANK FINALIZING DEAL WITH FOXSPORTS, PUTTING ON 3 SHOWS A MONTH Promoter Top Rank, which lost roughly 30 dates annually when Spanish-language network Telefutura canceled the weekly Friday night series "Solo Boxeo" at the end of 2008 for economic reasons, is filling the void.
Bob Arum's company, which controlled about three-quarters of the Telefutura dates, is finalizing a deal for 36 dates with Fox Sports en Espanol and sister network Fox Sports Net in 2010, Top Rank president Todd duBoef told ESPN.com Friday.
The deal calls for Top Rank to deliver three shows a month to the networks. Under the terms of the deal, two of the shows each month will come from sites in the United States. A third show each month will take place at a site in Mexico with Fernando Beltran's Zanfer Promotions, a leading Mexican promoter and Top Rank's longtime close associate, taking the lead. continue...

A recent report said Klitschko had signed a preliminary agreement to fight the Briton next year but the WBA champion rubbished the suggestion, saying he is focusing on his mandatory defence against John Ruiz.
Haye won the title last month with a points victory over Nicolai Valuev in Germany, and is known to be after Klitschko's WBC belt next. continue...
According to a source very close to the situation, Floyd Mayweather, JR., has threatened to pull out of the March showdown with Manny Pacquiao over a weight issue. Apparently the weight of the meeting has been established, but the wiggle room that Floyd allegedly wants is being contested by Team Pacquiao. In his bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, Floyd came in heavy and paid for it financially, but others contend that Marquez paid for it in the ring, losing badly. Pacquiao does not want to face a fighter a division or so heavier than he is and has rightfully protested.
With the Manny Pacquiao bout in limbo, other options have been mentioned but these appear to be negotiation tactics. Reportedly, Mayweather’s camp has suggested that an in between bout would take place in March against a much lesser foe, perhaps a Yuri Foreman or Matthew Hatton and after that, should Pacquiao not accept the terms, a bout with the winner of the Shane Mosley – Andre Berto fight could be in the wings.
Although other options have been mentioned, expect this fight to stay on course and occur. There is far too much money involved and they have agreed on the most important specifics…the cash divide. Now we are in the bickering stage of the negotiations and expect more and more little things blown out of proportion and turned into big deals. continue...
TWITTER FILES: BENARD HOPKINS ACCEPTS FIGHT WITH DANNY GREEN! With Roy Jones Jr. getting stopped in one round against Danny Green, which stopped the Benard Hopkins vs Roy Jones Jr. rematch, it leaves but only one fight left for Benard Hopkins. That fight is Benard Hopkins vs Danny Green. Danny let it be known that he wants to take out another legend and it is Benard Hopkins. Benard went to his twitter account and said "Danny Green called me out, I'll take the fight". This fight could be good, but where would it take place?
Let's start off by saying that Benard Hopkins is known for upsets. It seems the tougher the competition the better he trains and comes up with a brillant strategy. Even at 44 years old Benard has what it takes to win a World Title at Cruiserweight. It would be interesting to see what the fight odds would be. Danny Green feels real good right now and he feels beating Benard would seal his thirst for being a Legend Killer. Where would the fight take place? Back in Danny's home town of course. It would be the biggest draw and draw the most money. That is a no-brainer.
Junior welterweight Paulie Malignaggi (27-3, 5 KOs) gained revenge against Juan Diaz (35-3, 17 KOs), taking a twelve round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. All three judges scored it 116-111. Malignaggi was erroneously credited with a knockdown in round ten by referee Gino Rodriguez.
Welterweight Victor Ortiz (25-2-1, 20 KOs) returned from his loss to Marcos Maidana with a seventh round TKO over veteran Antonio Diaz (45-6-1, 27 KOs). Ortiz dropped Diaz in round three and the bout ended between rounds six and seven when Diaz could not continue due to a bad cut over his left eye

VITALI KLITSCHKO WINS UNANIMOUS DECISION OVER KEVIN JOHNSON WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Kevin Johnson (22-1-1, 9 KOs) on Saturday night at the PostFinance Arena in Bern, Switzerland. Vitali pressed the action and threw most of the power punches, but had trouble catching the crafty Johnson cleanly. Johnson was essentially a one-armed fighter as he relied almost exclusively on his jab. Klitschko became more dominant as the bout progressed, with the late rounds going all Vitali’s way. Scores were 120-108, 120-108, 119-109. Johnson became only the second fighter to go the full twelve with Vitali, the other being Timo Hoffmann. continue...

“I have just been informed though numerous press reports that Jermain Taylor has elected to continue his participation in The Super Six: World Boxing Classic tournament, and will face Andre Ward in April. It is with a heavy heart, but strong conviction, that I will recuse myself and DiBella Entertainment as Jermain’s promoter.
“Jermain’s career has been outstanding, and it has been a pleasure and honor to promote him. His victories against Bernard Hopkins remain the highlights of my career as a promoter. Jermain is not only a great fighter, but a good and decent man with a wonderful family. It is out of genuine concern for him and his family that I am compelled to make this decision. “I informed him, as I do all my contracted fighters, that my goal was to help his secure financial stability for his family, maximize his potential, and leave our unforgiving sport with his health intact.
“It is my belief that the continuation of Jermain’s career as an active fighter places him at unnecessary risk. While he is undoubtedly capable of prevailing in future bouts, I cannot, in conscience, remain involved given my assessment of such risk.
“I wish Jermain all the best in his future endeavors. All of us at DiBella Entertainment hold Jermain close to our hearts and consider him and his family part of our family. We wish him Godspeed and continued health.” – Lou DiBella continue...
